Morgan was born in Pella, Iowa on April 24, He would grow up to be a lawman in Dodge City , Kansas , and in Tombstone , Arizona , where he fought in the gunfight at the O.
In , Morgan moved with his family to San Bernardino , California. The pair soon moved to Butte, Montana , where he served as marshal. By , he had headed to Arizona, where he was appointed as a sheriff in Pima County. In January , he moved to Tombstone, where he first worked as a shotgun messenger for Wells Fargo.
In October , Virgil Earp became the city marshal of Tombstone. Soon afterward he recruited Wyatt and Morgan as special deputy policemen. Over the next few months, the Earp family came into conflict with two families, the Clantons and the McLaurys who were selling livestock in Tombstone. The Earp brothers believed that some of these animals had been stolen from farmers in Mexico.
Gene Evans attended the parade as well. My mother knew Gene Evans very well. My entire family graduated from Colton High School. Mother, Father, Aunt, brothers. IT WAS! I can remember every one of the establishments that Mario mentioned. Many fun memories growing up in Colton. Our mom made sure that we did what our dad had requested. I am Zack Earp, a distant cousin to Wyatt Earp. I have a brother currently living in Colton. We incorporated ourselves as the Earp Society. We did renactments, demonstrations, presentations to schools, librarys, historical societies, etc.
While we were in escrow, after the newspaper article came out, the owner of the house pulled out of the deal 7 escrow closed. We were very upset, sougt legal advice to no avail. Very happy to see others enjoying the Earp story. Our sons and daughters have also graduated from Colton. My grandparents established Martinez Bakery in and many times we would hear the stories of Wyatt Earp and his family. We would also hear stories of how Geronimo would pass through our town, resisting capture from authorities in his fight for freedom.
I, too remember all the establishments Mario mentioned. We lived not far from Gene Evans and I used to stop by his store on the way home from school. Colton has a great history and was a great place to grow up.
Im not as old as some of you posters here, but I remember alot of the places Mario mentioned…Naugel was a good place for fast food, The owner went broke basicly and hooked up with the Del Taco guy…The Taco Bell guy was the owner of Taco Tia I use to live right next door to the very first Mc Donalds in San Bernardino, The one owned by the Mc Donald Bros.
I just stumbled onto this website. I too like many others graduated from Colton High in I know that Morgan is buried at Hermosa where my mom and my wife are buried today. I left Colton and settled not far away in S an Bernardino, but my younger sister still resides in S.
Colton where i grew up. It is so refreshing to read all this and am glad i learned that Colton people still are proud of this City. My grandmother, Eva Jarvis, ran the concession stand at The Colton Plunge and my mom worked summers there. Some Earp history will help me enhance it. I had two great Aunts who ran boarding house during that time. I was attempting figure out what type of boarders they had. Not from the cement plant as that would not have been a transient type job.

So by February 17, Wyatt gathered another posse. Morgan Earp was involved. This one was also frustratingly unsuccessful for the Earp brothers. On March 18, Morgan took in a theater performance at Schieffelin Hall.
Saturday evening out, along with Doc Holliday and Dan Tipton. Opening night of "Stolen Kisses" by the Lingard Company. The billiard room was toward the back. Morgan walked to the table, started up a game with Bob Hatch. An alleyway was outside those back doors. Morgan lined up an angle on the pool table, to take his shot. Morgan's back faced the rear wall. It was close to 11 p. Suddenly two gunshots were heard by all there! The bullets entered through the upper glass of one of the doors.
The first shot hit Morgan. Getting him in the back, exiting his body at the front. The force of it still enough to enter Berry's leg. The second bullet whizzed above Wyatt's head and stuck into the wall. The bullets deployed in the assassination of Morgan Earp may have come from a Colt Single Action, believed to be the gun used, a circa revolver. McMasters and Hatch ran outside. They searched the alley behind the saloon, but didn't find the culprits. Goodfellow was nearby. He ran to see what happened.
They turned Morgan over. It didn't look good! Everyone tried standing him up, to bring him to the card room. As they did, he said his last words: "Don't, I can't stand it. This is the last game of pool I'll ever play. Newspaper correspondent Clara Spalding Brown had stern words about the acrimonious divisions in Tombstone.
Her letter of March 26, to the same newspaper accounted what happened to Morgan Earp. She concluded with "Divided as the sentiment of the place has always been, there are many now who denounce the Earps They got Morgan to a lounge in the card room. Goodfellow saw there was no hope.
By now the family was there. Virgil and Allie, James and Bessie, and Wyatt were at his side as his life dwindled away. Before the hour since the bullet entered his body had ticked by, Morgan was gone. Goodfellow's report showed the bullet went from the left of the spine across to exit on the front right. Perforating his left kidney, damaging his spinal cord, gall bladder and vena cava large major vein bringing the body's blood back to his heart: this would cause lots of blood loss quickly.
The next day was Sunday, March 19, Wyatt Earp turned 34 that day. A birthday seared in his memory, as he brought Morgan's body in a coffin to the Contention City train station. His brother James supervised transport of the body.
Morgan Earp was going home to their parents in Colton California, where they, and Louisa now resided. Morgan traveled from Contention to the connection in Tucson, going home for burial. The next day, Monday, more family members followed the route to the family home. Virgil and Allie took the train from Contention to Tucson, switching there to the California-bound train.
Wyatt heard of a possible ambush plan for the train stop in Tucson. Likely because Wyatt's intention was revenge for Morgan's death and Virgil's attack. Wyatt gathered a posse and boarded the train with Virgil.
At the station in Tucson, it was dinner time. The Earp group warily exited to get a meal at a nearby hotel restaurant, before the California departure at p. They ate their meal, and left. Virgil and Allie boarded the train. Wyatt spotted would-be assassins Ike Clanton and Frank Stilwell. He shot at them and Stilwell was found dead the next morning.
Wyatt Earp's Vendetta Ride was in full force! Morgan Earp didn't reach his 31st birthday when he was murdered. The whole event was certainly a sad situation. He has now lived through the years: In Infamy. As did all others involved in the gunfight that day. In the life of Morgan Earp there were many unfulfilled days yet to experience. Morgan was first buried in the original Colton town cemetery, near Mount Slover in California. This cemetery was relocated in Morgan Earp's body was then re-interred in Colton's Hermosa Cemetery.
