The size of the Portal team may have limited the resources they had to throw at any given problem, but in other ways they were more liberated. Because Valve had kept the team small, they were free to explore experimental or risky ideas that might scare away a larger development team. For much of the game, these kinds of experiments panned out, but not every experiment produces expected results. In fact, one of the jokes that the team did think might become a big thing has been entirely forgotten.
We thought we should have a warehouse full of Hoopy t-shirts and mugs and posters…we would watch that hoop roll by over and over again. That was the part of the game we were most proud of, and nobody cared. Hoopy probably just proves that development teams can get a little slaphappy as a game nears its ship date. But it also shows that one can ever expect what the wider gaming audience will latch onto; the mystery even extends to whether or not a game will sell.
As Portal neared its completion, the company began to wonder what they were going to do with the title. Should they package it as a standalone game, or release it for download only? Since Portal was so much shorter than most retail releases, no one knew how much they could expect people to pay for the game. Any fears Valve may have had that Portal would get lost in the crowd were quickly silenced once the game released, and many of the jokes Valve had forgotten about quickly became internet memes exchanged like secret handshakes.
It even ended with a musical number — but it was exactly what gamers were looking for at the time. Be sure to check out all our Portal 2 coverage on our Portal 2 landing hub. Join Sign In. Guided by a supercomputer named GLaDOS an acronym for Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System, voiced by Ellen McLain , players use the portal gun to perform a variety of tests, such as creating portals to knock over turrets and moving to a previously unreachable area.
Two additional modes are unlocked upon completion of the main game. In Advanced mode, the hardest levels of the game are made even harder with the addition of more obstacles and hazards.
Portal is Valve's professionally-developed spiritual successor to the freeware Narbacular Drop , the independent game released by students of the DigiPen; the original Drop team is now all employed at Valve. The key difference in the signature portal mechanic between the two games is that in Narbacular Drop the player can place a portal on a wall visible through another portal, whereas in Portal , the handheld portal device cannot fire a portal shot through a portal.
However, the handheld portal device can fire a portal shot while the player is standing in a portal. On March 5, , Portal 2 was officially announced after a series of cryptic clues were released in the form of an update to Portal. It was released on April 19, The game features new levels and achievements. The additional content is drawn from levels from the map based on Portal: The Flash Version by We Create Stuff and contains no additional story-related levels.
According to Valve spokesman Doug Lombardi, Valve had been in discussion with Microsoft to bring Portal to the Xbox Live Marketplace, but was limited by the amount bandwidth that Microsoft was willing to allow for such content.

It enables you to record your movements in the game and then replay them to move you through the levels. The depth surprised me: you record yourself flicking switches, moving things, ducking and standing to boost yourself and firing portals. As the name so cunningly suggests, this mod is based around the gels, making each level a parkour puzzle space that is far harder than the main game.
You get to fire the gel out of the gun in this mod, bringing it far closer to the student game that inspired Portal 2. Rocket League has a number of Portal-based accessories for your cars. But my favourite is in Skyrim.
That genuinely happened, btw. I suspect poor Phil would have had many more sleepless nights if Valve had made the competitive game mode. It involved two teams trying to manoeuvre a ball around a map.
It was a mix of the old Amiga game Speedball and Portal, except with none of the good parts of either of those two. The game was super chaotic and no fun, so the only good news about this part was that we cut it pretty quickly and were able to use those resources to develop co-op a little bit more. Believe it or not, they don't even officially endorse Portal 2, despite the fact that it's a really excellent game. What are we all playing this weekend? One thing about Elden Ring's open world leaves me a bit confused.
Death's Door is my kind of Soulslike, and I just can't get enough of it. If you click on a link and make a purchase we may receive a small commission. Read our editorial policy. You can see that here: To see this content please enable targeting cookies.
