How does profibus communication work

Couplers send physical bus characteristics between DP and PA networks. Furthermore, they do so transparently, bringing the networks together rather than directing the action. You can use couplers in explosive and non-explosive places, which we in the industry call ex and non-ex. Keep in mind, though, that in ex, you can only have so many devices in each segment. Links act as slaves for DP and masters for PA. They also support larger networks than couplers.

Each link has a physical address and can connect with up to five couplers. If you want to integrate the device into your control system, then you must have the GSD file. You can imagine the GSD file as a form, filled in with all the data on the device and the type of information it provides. It also has an editor with a syntax and semantics check to set up the file according to the GSD specifications.

Each segment of this copper cable needs a terminating resistor at both ends to absorb signal reflections that corrupt messages and trip the network. PROFIdrive was created for motion control applications. In this program, a device is sent to an independent laboratory for testing. The device then undergoes a comprehensive series of tests, including Hardware, Conformity, and Function tests, among others. The test results are documented. When a device passes all tests, its manufacturer can apply for a conformance certificate.

The certificate is valid for three years and can be renewed with further testing. Ready to take your automation protocol knowledge to the next level? Subscribe to the Automation Education Email Series to learn the ins and outs of the top industrial protocols in a byte-size weekly format!

Certification Processes February 12, The End of Cyclic Communication… October 17, Modbus for City Slickers June 13, Origin In , 21 companies and institutions in Germany joined forces to create a new protocol. Some application profiles are widespread, though. This, in combination with a watchdog timer in the master, ensures that all communication occurs every bus cycle with a certain time value.

The general bus scan would happen as shown in Figure 2. Master A receives the token, which gives it control of the bus. It will then exchange data with each of its slaves, and when complete, pass on the token to the next master if there is one. The requirement for detailed diagnostics from each slave is also built into the protocol.

During normal data exchange, a slave can alert the master that it has diagnostics, which the master will then read during the next bus scan. Profinet is built on the same principle as Profibus. However, in the case of Profibus, the Profibus specification does not simply refer to the existing RS specification. Instead, it extends the RS specification. The physical layer was tightened up to require only two wires, with speeds as fast as 12 megabits per second.

The Profibus specification also standardized the connectors to be used. All of this is beneficial when working with multiple vendors — wiring is easy and consistent.

Master Class 01 communicates cyclic information to control the process. Master Class 02 optional communicates acyclic information and is used for diagnostics, alarms and device configuration. Looking at the speed, the network works at 9. It is dedicated to field applications, where communication between the measuring instruments and the control system is required. Its physical network structure complies with IEC and the data rate on the network is At the time of development, Normally, there are fewer devices on an intrinsically safe bus when compared to a conventional network, but this depends on several factors that determine the optimal number of devices for each.

These are, for instance, instrument consumption current, bus length, cable type, etc. You can already find many manufacturers with field instruments using a native Ethernet-based protocol. Another advantage regarding its implementation, is that this type of protocol is easy to implement because it uses a well-known model with a low infrastructure cost.

The standard allows the network to be built up in many different ways, for instance a ring, line, tree or star etc.
