Why is equator hotter than poles

The closer you are to the equator, the hotter it will be. Especially in Summer months. Why is it hotter near the Equator than near the NOrth Pole? Thus, the polar regions spend half the year pointed away from the sun. Thus, the sun rays cover a large area due to the tilt and also do not hit all the areas with the same angle and intensity.
