Minot AFB enjoys all four seasons, but the region is known for its windy weather and harsh winters. In winter, the average highs at Minot AFB are in the low 20s and high teens. Average lows dip to the single digits. Winter brings blizzards and low temperatures that, combined with the wind chill, can be dangerous.
Bundle up, winterize your car, and follow traffic adversaries. The base gets about 35 inches of snow annually. In the summer, temperatures warm up considerably. The average high can soar to the 80s. Summer nights cool down, with average lows in the 50s. Minot AFB gets about 14 inches of rain annually, mostly in the summer months. Summer also brings possible tornadoes. Minot AFB and the surrounding region are home to historical sites, museums, a zoo, great restaurants and breweries, and shopping venues.
On base, there are a multitude of recreational opportunities, including arts and crafts, bowling, golfing, paintball, swimming, and more. Get out and explore! Coming from the South you will pass the town of Ruthville, about two miles south of the base. The first gate is the south gate, but don't stop there.
A mile further is the main gate and the base's Visitor Control Center, your first stop. Navigating around Minot is made easy with the city divided into four quadrants; Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast. Most of the roads are numbered with streets running North and South and Avenues running East and West. For those traveling by train, you will be arriving at the train station in the center of the city.
If your sponsor is not meeting you at the train station; there are three taxi companies that will take you to base: Central Cab Company, ; Premier Taxi, ; Taxi, Minot does not have a commercial bus service.
The Base Taxi is available for "Official" business. You can make arrangements for the Base Taxi by calling Free transportation is provided year round to students living on base and attending downtown public schools. Bus Service is also provided to the on-base schools from November through March.
Specific dates will be published yearly. It will take months to proceed, therefore you must do it early. It depends on your rank and whether you plan to bring in your family too or not. Make reservations by calling AF LODGE and you may have the option of having your sponsor or gaining unit making a reservation for you in advance. There are multiple taxi services offering rides to the base, or you can coordinate with your sponsor. All vehicles operating at Minot Air Force Base must comply with North Dakota state law including seat belt use, cell phone laws, mandatory insurance minimum coverage laws, etc. A base decal or vehicle registration are not required.
